AN INTERVIEW WITH DIANN MILLS

What authors have influenced you as a writer?

Tracie Peterson, Lauraine Snelling, Gayle Roper, James Scott Bell, Steven James, Tom Morrissey

What does an average workday look like for you?

I am a scheduled and disciplined writer. I’m up before five a.m. for a quiet time, answering e-mail, exercise, breakfast, and shower. The rest of the morning is spent writing. When I’m in the writing process, I have a word count, and I stick to it. The afternoons are spent finishing up word count, reading and editing, examining my writing students’ work, and promotion. Oh, I'm taking a few college courses. :)

Do you still experience rejection? If so, what do you do about it?

I think we all do! It's redirection for the manuscript. What were the editor's comments? Were there suggestions for improvement? Did the manuscript simply not fit their needs? My agent and I discuss the situation and move on from there.

What is your best advice for new writers?

  1. Keep writing and write everyday.
  2. Read in the genre you want to write. Dissect those novels and figure out why they work for you.
  3. Read and study the books about how to write
  4. Participate in conferences and network while you are there.
  5. Participate in a writing group.
  6. What you learn, give back to other writers.
  7. Above all pray your work glorifies God.

What is your biggest dream?

That is a powerful question! I suppose for many unbelievers to be brought to Christ because of something He had me write.

How long have you been writing?

Since 1996

How long had you been writing when you first got published?

Little over two years

What was your reaction when you heard that your first book would be published?

Incredible! Unbelievable! Hubby and I celebrated with a grand and romantic dinner.

How do you stay so organized? Do you multitask?

Although I'm not so sure that multitask is a good thing, I do juggle a lot -- and multitask. I'm also extremely scheduled and disciplined.

Tell us about your lastest book.

Breach of Trust is the first book in the Call of Duty series, published by Tyndale.
Paige Rogers is a former CIA agent who lost all she treasured seven years ago when her entire team was killed in a covert mission. She blames their leader—Daniel Keary—whom Paige believes betrayed them. Disillusioned and afraid for her life, she disappeared and started a new life as a small-town librarian. But when Keary announces his candidacy for governor of her state, he comes after Paige to ensure that she won’t ruin his bid for office. He threatens everything she holds dear, and Paige must choose between the life of hiding that has become her refuge . . . or risking everything in one last, desperate attempt to right old wrongs.
